Bad Odors?
If you smell a bad odor coming from your bathroom chances are that it is sewage gas coming up from your drain lines. There could be several reasons for the smell, some very dangerous, and you should call a plumber immediately. The smell is can be very hazardous to your health. This smell can contain bacteria and methane gases which in high concentrations can cause an explosion.
There are online suggestions saying to use bleach for a while, then vinegar, then wait a bit and add baking soda. If you try these remedies be very, very careful if you mix bleach and vinegar as it will produce a very toxic chlorine and chloramine gas which can be fatal. Each of your drain lines should have what is called a P-Trap. A P-Trap creates a water seal that prevents gases from coming back into your house. Your main drain lines may have what is called a vent pipe. These vents are sometimes vented out the top of your house. Ever wondered about the white pipe sticking out of the top of your house? Indeed, that is a vent pipe.
Other reasons that you could be smelling odor include:
- the wax ring on your toilet needs to be replaced
- you may have cracked drain lines under your house
- your vent pipe may be stopped up
- your main drain line may be clogged up
- a P-Trap was never installed in your house
The good thing about the odor is that a plumber can and usually finds the problem and fixes it painlessly and quickly.
